Signups
Each team in the WCSL has its own registration forms, days and deadlines. Fees for swimming on swim teams will vary from team to team based on the fees that are owed to the WCSL plus their costs (employing coaches, buying equipment, sponsoring parties, t-shirts, etc.). Team swimsuits are usually an additional cost. Some teams will hold fundraising events to help subsidize the cost of running a team, while others are supported through private company ownership, YMCA's or the WCPR. All swimmers must be registered with a team to compete in a swim meet. All team rosters, weekly roster updates and meet attendance are sent to the WCSL Treasurer and Secretary. Parents are asked at registration to sign up to work swim meets.
Practices
Practice times and sessions will vary with each team, but daily practice time is extremely important to be a successful swimmer and to have a successful team. The summer season is very short (7-8 weeks) and it would be a rare swimmer who could master all four strokes, turns and takeoffs without proper instruction and hours of practice. Regular practice builds confidence, improves endurance, strengthens stroke technique and benefits the team. Swim coaches may get in the water with the smallest swimmers initially, but most of the coaching is done on deck so many swimmers can be observed at the same time. Special help sessions, many times, can be arranged with the coach if a swimmer needs one.
