WCSL Introduction Manual

Introduction

The Williamson County Swim League(WCSL) was originally formed in 1997 as a swim league “plant” from the Nashville Swim League.  Sixteen swim teams were original charter members and the league has seen its numbers grow from 1200 swimmers to almost 2000 swimmers.  Swimming is a strong sport in southern Middle Tennessee and the WCSL wants to provide an opportunity for children and teens to enjoy participating in this sport during the summer months.  Fun, sportsmanship, teamwork and exercise are all values that the WCSL want their swimmers to carry away with them each year.

Organization

The WCSL is governed by a Board of 6 elected members including: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Rules/Officials and President Ex-Officio.  Divisional Vice Presidents are appointed by the President.  These Board positions are non-voting except the President in case of a tie.  Voting members of the WCSL are the Team Representatives from each team. Each team has one vote, so all teams are equally represented regardless of size.  The Board meets once in January and February  to begin the year and then monthly from May through July to conduct business, set policy, set schedules, give out supplies and plan for the Championship Meet.   A Board meeting in October finishes up any old business and allows for officer elections if needed. Special consultants and committee members lend assistance to the Board for Scholarships, Championship Meet administration, website, and publicity.  All these people volunteer their time for the League’s benefit.  The WCSL has a written Constitution available to anyone to read.

Eligibility

All individual teams have policies for their own members.  Some pools are neighborhood only pools, others require club membership and still others are open to the public.  The WCSL requires that a swimmer be a member of one of the teams and be no older than a current year graduated high school senior.  There is no age minimum, however, for safety purposes, many teams require that a young swimmer be able to demonstrate the ability to swim at least 25 yards unassisted before competing in a meet.  There are six competitive age groups: 6 and under, 7/8 year olds, 9/10 year olds, 11/12 year olds, 13/14 year olds, 15-18 year olds.  The swimmers age as of June 1st determines their age for the season.
